Stills from Day 3 by David Newsom
Day Three we moved into the indoor cages. This was a really emotional day. I, (Sian), was on my second day of battling the flu and the barking alone was enough to drive us all insane. Ellie, our producer and AD promised everyone on the crew a shot of whiskey and a pair of earplugs. We should have made good on this promise. And while we knew we were doing a good thing by telling this story, it was also impossible for us to find a home for every dog, and therefore, heartbreaking to hang out around the cages. The shelter workers were great about handling the dogs and moving them around for us as we needed. And Zach was a trooper, getting down on that filthy cage floor and hanging out with our Rizzo with little more than an eye-roll and a smile as protest. We were simultaneously thrilled and saddened when halfway through the day, two women came into the shelter and adopted our lead dog, Frannie. Several crew members had been vying to take her.
In the afternoon, we had a company move to “Oliver’s House”. We took over our friend Maria’s home, which was right next door, shot in every room in her house, and then moved up to the Before the Door offices to finish our night. This was also a big day, with a ton of scenes. We went late into the night and, thanks to the energy and enthusiasm of a tireless cast and crew, at the end of it all, we had our movie! We are very proud of it and proud of the people who worked on it. Thank you to all of you, our generous donors, who made this film happen. And a big thank you to David Newsom for shooting all of these beautiful images and documenting an amazing, memorable experience!
